OVERVIEWRaccoon Creek is named for the stream that
meanders through the course. It is built on the old Grant Ranch, which was originally
acquired by Governor James Benton Grant about 1878. Grant was raised in the south, and
brought the southern tradition of hunting and shooting with him to Colorado. He soon
established a gun club on the ranch. Grant served as governor of Colorado from 1883 to
1885.
The Grant Ranch has been active as
a working ranch and enjoyed by the family for riding and equestrian pursuits. During World
War II it was a breeding center for the U.S. Army Remount Service, providing stud services
for the area. One of the stallions was Granville, who ran in the 1936 Kentucky Derby.
The
sporting history of the Grant Ranch goes back over a century and continues with the
golfing tradition and the community of today. Built in the late 1990's and early 2000's,
Grant Ranch Community covers 493 acres (100 of which are dedicated to open space) and is
home to almost 2000 families. There are walking trails within Grant Ranch and residents
can also take advantage of the Village Center. The Village Center includes the tennis
courts, swimming pool, and meeting rooms. It also includes the full-and part-time staff
members who operate the Village Center and all of the social and fitness events that occur
there. There are a variety of builders who contributed to Grant Ranch. At the present time,
there is no new construction with regards to the golf course, only newer resales. However
there are peripheral subdivisions with some new options.
